| NÄrad Moh from Ramcharitmanas, lecture by Swami Prakashananda In 1631, Goswami Tulsidas began writing Shri Ramcharitmanas, a poetic retelling of the Ramayana, in Avadhi, a derivative of Hindi. The composition of this work marked the first time that the Ramayana was made available to the common man. During the first part of Ramcharitmanas, called the Balakanda, it is explained that Shiva is retelling the story of Ram to Parvati. During this retelling, Shiva explains at least five reasons why Ram incarnated on earth. One of the reasons is NÄrad Moh–the curse of Sage NÄrad. In NÄrad Moh, NÄrad Muni, when faced with a challenge to his allegiance to Vishnu, prevails and develops a puffed-up pride as a result. In reaction to this display, Vishnu creates an illusionary world–one which serves to teach NÄrad the lessons he needed to learn, but also provides the impetus for Ram to incarnate. Attend Swami Prakashananda’s talk on NÄrad Moh. You will leave with a wonderful understanding of the story and the important lessons to be learned.
