Kuchipudi Dance Drama - CHANDALIKA
Smt. Sailaja Chaudhary and her students at Kuchipudi Natyalaya of Foxborough are presenting an evening of scintillating Kuchipudi dance. The highlight of the evening is the dance drama “Chandalika†that has been choreographed by ‘Padmavibhushan’ Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam, produced and directed by Smt. Sailaja Chaudhary. All the proceeds will be donated to Kalinga Eye Institute in Dhanekal, Orissa through 'Unite for Sight' (www.uniteforsight.org). The story is based on the 1933 Bengali Play written by Nobel Laureate Dr,Rabindranath Tagore. In this adaptation, the story describes the life experiences of a girl named Prakriti who is shunned by the society around her as a “Chandalika†or a girl from the low “Chandala†caste. Being oppressed and treated like an untouchable all her life, the depressed Prakriti meets Ananda, a wandering Buddhist Monk who requests her to quench his thirst with some water. Prakriti hesitates to do so because she is forbidden to interact with higher class individuals like the monk. Ananda persuades her that all beings are equal in the eyes of God and accepts water from her. Prakriti falls in love with Ananda and requests her mother Maya to use magical powers and bind this noble monk to herself. When she sees Ananda weakened and degraded by those powers, Prakriti repents for her ignorance and begs forgiveness. Ananda persuades her to adopt the Buddhist way of life and helps her attain eternal peace as a monk. Smt. Sailaja has about 30 dancers contributing to the performances of the evening. The event is a culmination of several months of hard work and dedication by the students who have put in several hours of practice each week.
