Culture Shock featuring the Best of Boston
Boston University India Club [BUIC] will host an exclusive concert on January 29th, 2011 at Tsai Performance Center of Boston University. Culture Shock featuring the Best of Boston will include the world-renowned Culture Shock trio Lomaticc, Baba Khan, and Sunny Brown; along with local Boston teams as exhibition acts representing different Indian dance styles as well as another exhibition act by BU’s own South Asian A Cappella group Suno. The production will serve as a means of enhancing diversity in the Greater Boston area through this cultural expression.

The concert’s main act Culture Shock contains three very talented artists from Canada. Lomaticc is a producer, artist, and songwriter who has brought an interesting twist to South Asian music. Baba Khan is a club DJ who has produced sensational beats that have hit the biggest radio stations in UK, Canada, and USA. Sunny Brown is a composer and producer who has changed the sound of South Asian music with his unique style. Together, Lomaticc, Baba Khan, and Sunny Brown have created a revolutionary tone to South Asian music and have become one of the most popular artists in the genre!

The different types of dance that will be displayed as exhibition acts represent a plethora of cultures and traditions in India. Garba-Raas reflect the rich traditions derived from the Indian state of Gujarat. Garba is a devotional dance performed in a circle around either a candle or a picture of a God or Goddess; Raas involves lines moving in opposite directions, as well as more complex steps and patterns of hitting dandiyas, or sticks. Indian fusion is a collaboration of many types of dances. This includes, but is not limited to, Western, Contemporary, Bollywood, and Classical Indian. Finally, Bhangra reigns from the Indian state of Punjab. This type of dance is performed with upbeat rhythms of a classical Indian drum, dhol, and vibrantly ethnic body movements.
