Press Release 08/22/2024 Kumu Gupta’s song “Don’t Hurt Me No More” (Acapella style) is an entry for the Recording Academy’s Harry Belafonte Best Social Change Award 2024. The song is about domestic violence, words a victim is saying to her partner and is comprised across adult and youngsters, different ethnic backgrounds, Covid, diversity and assault scenarios. Miss Gupta has been helping victims of domestic violence for over 2 decades both locally and internationally being involved with the UN, the white house and other organizations and felt this theme most suited for marking the 30th Ann. of Violence Against Women Act VAWA authored by then Senator Joseph Biden, this September. Kumu was nominated for President’s Citizen Medal (white house) for her years of volunteer work in helping survivors. Kumu’s new recent initiative Global Peace Secretariat has women’s rights, domestic violence as one of its pillars as Kumu strongly feels that ‘there cannot be global peace’ without ending all violence against women. Kumu Gupta was nominated for the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her over 2 decades of work in women’s & children’s rights and global peace. The Harry Belafonte Best Song For Social Change Award (formerly known as the Best Song For Social Change Award from 2022-2024) is a CEO’s Merit Award (Recategorized from Special Merit Award to CEO’s Merit Award in 2024) established by the Recording Academy’s National Trustees in 2022 to honor songwriter(s) of message-driven music that speaks to the social issues of our time and has demonstrated and inspired positive global impact. Recipient(s) are selected annually by a committee composed of a community of peers dedicated to artistic expression, the craft of songwriting and the power of songs to effect social change. Named in honor of the late entertainment icon Harry Belafonte, who was a powerful voice for social justice throughout his illustrious career, this award recognizes exceptional contributions to music and social advocacy. This is the 3rd year of this special category award. The inaugural Best Song For Social Change Award (2022) for song “Baraye” was presented by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden at the Grammy Awards Program. The Harry Belafonte Best Song for Social Change 2024 will be awarded at the 2025 GRAMMYs Sunday, Feb. 2, Live in Los Angeles.
