Does Time Cycle? - An Indian Point of View, Lecture by Thomas Burke
Indian tradition for the most part regards history as consisting in ages which occur in recurring cycles. In this view history has unfolded over immense spans of years, a vastly longer time than the few thousand years envisaged by most pre-modern thinkers in other cultures. The lecture will attempt to sketch the systems of cyclical eras conceived by the Jainas, the Buddhists and the Hindu tradition. It will discuss the history and evolution of the notion of cyclical time and will offer some suggestions about its possible effect on Indian life, society and culture.
