Vipassana Meditation & The Scientific World-View
What is Vipassana?
Vipassana Meditation was taught and practiced by the Buddha before Buddhism was invented. It is pragmatic, free of ideology, and guides the practitioner to states of mental balance and peace. It is a serious meditation that requires a ten-day residential retreat to learn. It is remarkable for its mind-body integration, and for its compatibility with the scientific world-view. Vipassana, as taught in the tradition of Acarya S.N. Goenka, is currently practiced by more than one million people around the world. This talk will describe how it is learned and practiced, and what its appeal is for Twenty-first Century practitioners. Who is Dr Paul R. Fleischman? Paul R. Fleischman MD trained in Psychiatry at Yale University and has been honored by the American Psychiatric Association for his unique contributions to the spiritual and humanistic aspects of Psychiatry. He is the author of The Healing Spirit: Explorations in Religion and Psychotherapy, Karma and Chaos: Essays on Vipassana Meditation, Cultivating Inner Peace, and other books.
