Harvard Lecture; Indian History from 5000 BC
Harvard University
Department of Sanskrit and Indian Studies
Outreach Lecture

Fall 2009
Indian Society through the Ages
Lecture II

Dr. Prasannan Parthasarathi
Associate Professor
Boston College

This presentation will explore 5000 years of human activity in the Indian subcontinent, and in the context of geography and ecology. This perspective examines India's position in the larger region and in the global system. Three dimensions of Indian history will be explored. The first is the relationship between the humans and the environment and the ways in which ecology shaped Indian society. The second is the relationship between the community and the territory and how that has been both an integral element in Indian society and how it has evolved over the millennia. The third is the relationship between the Indian subcontinent and the larger world in terms of trade, commerce and cultural exchange.
