Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, also known as “Amma”, is the founder of a global network of charitable and humanitarian service organizations and champion of women's rights. Amma has donated 46 million dollars (largest private donor) towards the tsunami relief efforts and $1,000,000 to the Bush-Clinton Hurricane Katrina fund. Her charitable activities include a program to build 100,000 homes for the poor, pension disbursements to 50,000+ widows, the construction and oversight of hospitals, universities, schools, orphanages, hospices, women's shelters, community aid centers and homes for the aged, as well as programs for the preservation and protection of the environment. Called the "Hugging Saint" by the US media, she has received extensive press coverage by television stations and newspapers including CNN, ABC, MSNBC, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Boston Globe. Amma has been featured on numerous national television programs including “Good morning America” and the recent CBS special “In God’s Name” which explored the complex questions of our time through the intimate thoughts and beliefs of 12 of the world’s most influential spiritual leaders. Over the past 30 years, she has greeted more than 26 million people, including dozens of internationally renowned leaders with her unique compassionate embrace. As Dr. Jane Goodall, while presenting Amma with the 2002 Gandhi-King Award for Non-violence at the UN said, " She stands here in front of us. God's love in a human body." Come experience that love in person.
