In Boston Musica Viva’s final concert of its 2007-08 season the ensemble performs four works suffused with a kaleidoscopic array of cultural influences. Hands Across the Seas will be performed on Friday, May 2, 2008 at 8 PM at Boston University’s Tsai Performance Center, 685 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston. This internationally-oriented program will feature the world premiere of Songs of Ecstasy by Boston-based Indian composer, Shirish Korde. His newest work is a cross-cultural exploration of mystical texts from different world religions (Hindu Bhakti, Sufi, Christian), featuring Indian dancer Wendy Jehlen and Canadian-Pakistani soprano Zorana Sadiq. Chen Yi’s QI, one of her greatest works, draws on her Chinese musical heritage, translating the essence of Chinese culture to Western instruments. '. . . QI, a glittering, kinetic juggernaut of a piece, said yet more about the immense talent of the Chinese-born composer, Chen Yi . .' – The Boston Globe. Osvaldo Golijov is widely acclaimed for works that move among musical genres with a global sensibility of different styles and forms. '…One of the hottest composers on the classical scene today, with a multicultural idiom that connects instantly to a wide range of audiences…' – Musical America. There is Wind and There are Ashes in the Wind uses words by Elie Wiesel about the Holocaust spoken intermittently by the clarinetist and pianist, evoking Golijov’s Jewish and Argentinean heritage. California composer William Kraft’s Percussion Concerto was inspired by a visit to the “rude bridge†in Concord, MA and is based upon an American Revolution drum and fife tune.

Join us as Indian composer Shirish Korde offers insights into the origins, ideas and inspirations that influenced him in the creation of his new work, Songs of Ecstasy and its roots in Indian classical music and dance. Conductor Richard Pittman will also share his thoughts and highlight key points of the other works on the program.
