Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri Dr. R.K. His father late Sri Krishna Sastry was a great scholar, a versatile artist and a Harikatha vidwan. Hi s grandfather Sri Narayanappa of Bettadapura was also a great musician and a close friend of Sri Veena Seshanna of Mysore. Sri Srikantan was initiated into music by his father and later by his brother Sri R.K.Venkatarama Sastry - a leading violinist. It is notable that Sri Srikantan belongs to the lineage of shishya parampara of Sathguru Thyagaraja himself. The noteworthy features of Srikantan’s music are strict adherence to sruti, clear-cut pronunciation of the text and equal emphasis on rhythm with simultaneous concentration on Bhava and Bhakti aspects of music. Srikantan has been particularly instrumental in giving wide popularity to the Devaranamas of all Haridasas and especially of Purandaradasa throughout the country by his accurate rendering of the songs investing them with depth of tone and continuity of flow. He retired as the music producer of AIR, Bangalore after a meritorius service of 32 years. Srikantan has been performing for over six decades throughout the length and breadth of the country in all leading sabhas and festival series. He has toured USA several times and has given a series of concerts across the country. He still performs in a manner where he touches the soul of a sangeetha rasika. Srikantan is a teacher with a difference and his disciples of prominence include Sri Rudrapatnam Ramakanth, Smt M.S.Sheela, Smt T.S.Sathyavathi among others. Sri Srikantan has been a recipient of many awards and titles including the prestigious Sangeetha Kalanidhi (Music Academy, Madras, 1996).
