Pratham Education Roundtable
Date: October 12, 2006 Time: 6pm-8pm Venue: Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University Speakers: Ujjwal Thakkar, CEO Pratham Education Initiative Anil Shah, President Pratham USA Subject: India is home to 400M illiterates out of 1B illiterates in the world. Around 100 million 3 to 11 year olds are at risk of dropping out from the primary school. Without formal education, these children will be left out of the mainstream and will remain untouched by India's impressive economic growth. Ensuring basic education for children is critical to ensure they earn a better life for themselves and play an active role in India's development. However, given the magnitude of the problem, this is a huge challenge. Pratham is a non-profit education that has been playing a pivotal role in providing primary education since 1993. It has an innovative model that is practical, simple and low cost. Pratham has directly helped over 300,000 children in India. The education round table will discuss Pratham's novel and scalable approach to address literacy and engage the audience in a discussion on how the approach might be extended in India and beyond.
