Pt. Suhas Vyas, Prof. David Reck & Sri Gordon Korstange / LearnQuest
The Hindustani music session (10:00 AM - 12:30 PM) will feature Pt. Suhas Vyas in a vocal recital, accompanied on the Harmonium by Smt. Priti Chakravarty and on the Tabla by Shri Chris Pereji.

The Karnatik music session (2:30 - 5:30 PM) will feature Prof. David Reck on the veena and Sri Gordon Korstange on the flute in an instrumental duet, accompanied by Sri Umyalpuram Mali on the mridingam.

Artist Profiles

Shri Suhas Vyas
Suhas Vyas, son and disciple of Padmabhushan Pandit C.R.Vyas, is an established vocalist on the contemporary scene of indian Classical Music. He was fortunate to be in the august company of great artists such as Pandit Kumar Gandharva, Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, and most of all, his celebrated father Pandit C.R.Vyas, from whom he got brilliant insights in the complex labyrinths of ragas. In addition to these world renowned vocalists, Suhas has also benefited from the time he has spent with musical giants such as Mirashibuwa, Jagannathbuwa Purohit alias GUNIDAS and Rajarambuwa Paradkar. He has also received guidance from musical teachers such as Pandit K.G.Ginde and Pandit S.C.R.Bhat. One can notice an impact all these artists have had on Suhas's style of performance. A challenge that Suhas faced early on in his carrer was to establish his own identity which was distinct from the towering image of his father. Interestingly, both listeners and critics have admitted that Suhas has succeeded in this daunting task and has created his own niche style of performances which is deeply rooted in tradition while at the same time has the unmistaken stamp of all these great influences Suhas Vyas is today recognized as a torch bearer of the ancient traditions as well as carrying forward the renaissance movement of indian Classical Music. His performance are marked with a deep and learned interpretation of the raga and a sense of rediscovering the tradition. His concerts are marked with innate beauty and poise and noted for systematic rendition of compositions that is tied strongly to the traditions that he has learned in. Suhas has been performing on prestigious platforms all over the country and abroad. He is also a graded artist at All india Radio and has cut several CD's and cassettes tapes. Suhas has been promoting the cause of Indian Classical Music by training several students and conducting lecture demonstrations both, in India and abroad.

Smt. Priti Chakravarty
Priti Chakravarty received her musical traing from the distinguished musician Pt. Vinayak Rao Patwardhan and his son Pt. N. V. Patwardhan. Priti performed in India and also had an active academic career in Hindustani music associated with Universities of Patna, Bhagalpur, and Ranchi in Bihar, India. She specializes in the Dhrupad, Khayal, Thumri, and Bhajan styles. She is also an accomplishes accompanist on the harmonium. Priti is currently teaching hindustani music at the Learnquest Academy of Music.

Shri Christopher Pereji
Christopher Pereji received his initial training in music from his grandfather Shri Purushotham Pereji. Subsequently, he studied music for 10 years under the tutelage of a poet-musician Shri M. Vidyanandam with whom he also gained valuable experience in arranging music, writing and composing lyrics, a few of which were aired on All India Radio, and telecast on Hyderabad Doordarshan. Chris is a versatile musician with a passion for tabla, harmonium, keyboards, guitar, and voice. Having many years of experience in academics, Chris is able to adapt different styles of presentation when he teaches tabla, harmonium, keyboard and other instruments. Currently, Chris teaches a hands-on course Adapting the Keyboard to Various Styles of Indian Musicí at LearnQuest Music Academy, Waltham, MA. Chris also offers private lessons in tabla, keyboard and harmonium. Chris has accompanied numerous local and visiting vocalists, playback singers, and instrumentalists in India, USA, and Canada.

Sri Gordon Korstange
Gordon Korstange began learning flute as a Peace Corps volunteer in south India in 1971. From 1980 until 1985, Gordon continued to learn flute from the renowned Vidwan T. Viswanathan at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, and during that time, he received a C.A.S. in World Music and Creative Writing from Wesleyan. Gordon has played for numerous dance performances in the Amherst area and in Connecticut and has been an accompanist for the dancer Nina Gulati and poet Robert Bly. He is the author of a volume of poetry, The Road Behind Whitens in the Sun, published in Calcutta, India. Gordon lives in Saxtons River, Vermont.

Sri David Reck
David Reck is Professor of Music at Amherst College. A graduate of the World Music Program at Wesleyan University and of the College of Karnatic Music (Madras), he has studied primarily with Ms. Ranganayaki Rajagopalan, a master musician of the Karaikudi tradition under grants from the Rockefeller and Guggenheim foundations and the John D. Rockefeller III Fund. He is the author of Music of the Whole Earth and a co-author of Worlds of Music. He has concertized widely and has appeared at the East-West Festival, the Museum of Modern Art'’s Summergarden series, and at colleges and universities in India and the United States.

Sri Umayalpuram Mahalingam
Umayalpuram Mali received his mridingam training under illustrious vidwans Kumbakonam Sri Rajappa Iyer and Umayalpuram Sri Sivaraman. Sri mali has accompanied many stalwarts of yesteryears like Sri S. Kalyanaraman, and Veena S. Balachandar (through his concert tour in Mauritius islands). He currently accompanies the leading musicians of today, like Smt. T. Mukta, Sri T. N. Seshagopalan, Sri T. V. Sankaranarayanan, Sri O. S. Thyagarajan, and many others. Sri Mali was honored this year with the title of 'Yuva Kala Bharathi' from the Bharathi Kalachar.
