Ashwin Navratri, sacred to the Devi Durga, is celebrated from the 1 st to 9 th day of Ashwin Shukla Paksha of the Hindu Calendar. Devi Durga is the inherent dynamic energy through which the supreme consciousness (Parmatman) manifests itself. She is the embodiment of purity, knowledge, truth and self-realization. Sadhana of Devi Durga, signifies the process by which the divine potential within every living being removes its layers of ignorance and achieves the state of self-realization. Hindus celebrate this occasion as an auspicious time every year to constantly remind themselves of the significance of this very process. Therefore Durga Pooja is an extremely special time of the year when Hindus contemplate  the progress they have  made on their  spiritual journey and celebrate with great joy the victory of the supreme consciousness over the demons of ignorance. This festival commemorates the victory of Devi Durga over a demon, Mahishasur.

Vijaya Dashami (Dashahara) is celebrated on the 10th day of Ashwin Shukla Paksha i.e. the day after the end of Navaratri .
