About the Artists:

Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri R. K. Srikantan hails from a distinguished traditional family of musicians in Rudrapatnam in Karnataka and belongs to a rare breed of Carnatic musicians who strive and achieve perfection within the bounds of tradition or sampradaayam. His father late Sri Krishnasastry was a great scholar, a versatile artist and a Harikatha vidwan. His grandfather Sri Narayanappa of Bettadapura was also a great musician and a close friend of Sri Veena Seshanna of Mysore. Sri Srikantan was initiated into music by his father and later by his brother Sri R.K.Venkataramasastry - a leading violinist. It is notable that Sri Srikantan belongs to the lineage of shishya parampara of Sathguru Thyagaraja himself. The noteworthy features of Srikantan music are strict adherence to sruti, clear-cut pronunciation of the text and equal emphasis on rhythm with simultaneous concentration on Bhava and Bhakti aspects of music. Srikantan has been particularly instrumental in giving wide popularity to the Deveranamas of all Haridasas and especially of Purandaradasa throughout the country by his accurate rendering of the songs investing them with depth of tone and continuity of flow. He retired as the music producer of AIR, Bangalore after a meritorius service of 32 years. Srikantan has been performing for over six decades throughout the length and breadth of the country in all leading sabhas and festival series. He has toured USA several times and has given a series of concerts across the country. He still performs in a manner where he touches the soul of a sangeetha rasika. Srikantan is a teacher with a difference and his disciples of prominence include Sri Rudrapatnam Ramakanth, Smt M.S.Sheela, Smt T.S.Sathyavathi among others.

Sri Srikantan has been a recipient of many awards and titles including the prestigious Sangeetha Kalanidhi (Music Academy, Madras, 1996). Very recently he was conferred with the Annual Music Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement in the field of Carnatic Classical music by SVN Music Academy, Bangalore (Oct, 2002). He is the first recipient of this award. In 2003 he bas been honored with Sangeetha Ratnakara award from Cleveland Aradhana Committee.

Sangeetha Kala Praveena R. S. Ramakanth is a child prodigy with training from his father R.K. Srikantan and uncle R K Venkatarama Sastri. He is provided with rich flexible voice, profound imagination and traditional style of singing and has performed in India, UK, Switzerland, Australia and many other countries.

Tara Bangalore, an accomplished violinist and vocalist of Carnatic Music, began vocal training at the age four. Her gurus have included T. M.Tyagarajan, K.V. Krishnan, and Shankara Sharma. She began violin training at the age of eight with Smt. Vedavalli Ramaswami of Delhi and Smt. T. Rukmini of Madras. Tara has received numerous awards from the Music Academy and Krishna Gana Sabha in Madras, including Best Junior Artist for three consecutive years. She has accompanied T. R. Subramaniam, M. L. Vasantha Kumari, Prof. Ramanathan, and Nookala Satyanarayan in concerts. She has also performed solos with her Guru Smt. T. Rukmini. She presently teaches Carnatic music to violin and vocal students at her studio in Framingham.

Mahalingam Santhanakrishnan (Mali) is a disciple of Sri P. Srinivasa Iyer of Madras, a retired A.I.R. artist, who is a disciple of the illustrious Padmashree Palghat T.S. Mani Iyer. Mali's forte is his seamless accompanying style that supports and embellishes the main artist's rendering of the compositions and improvisations. He has also taken advanced lessons from Padmashri Palghat R. Raghu, when Sri Raghu visited the US. Mali has accompanied many leading local artists and many renowned senior visiting artists from India such as Sri T.R. Subramanyam, Smt. R. Vedavalli, Sri V. Subrahmanyam, Sri R. Prasanna, Alapuzha Sri Venkatesan, Sri V.K. Raman among others. He has also performed in fusion concerts, notably with Sri Sandip Burman. Mali resides in the Boston area.
