NE Hindi Manch: Baal Manch
On June 29th 2014, Hindi Manch will proudly present its fourth annual Baal Yuva Manch - a talent show in Hindi for the kids and by the kids. The event will showcase approximately 9 groups, with total count of participating kids touching upwards of 100. And the performances range from skits to short plays to group songs. The event typically lasts for approximately 2 and ½ hours, which passes by in a blink.

As a mother of two participating kids, for consecutive years now, I can tell you how excited my entire household is. My home (and car, and the cellphone) buzzes with Hindi dialogues and songs these days, with my younger daughter prompting (almost whispering) a word to my elder son if he was to mull over it while narrating his line. Isn’t that simply wonderful! And the weekly practice sessions are such a treat. It is remarkable to observe how kids learn from their peers so much more than when we, the parents, coach (read nag) them on something. Watching their peers speak in Hindi, suddenly gives them a sense of belongingness - a feeling that I’m NOT the odd one out.

This reminds me of the African quote I’d read, and feel it on a daily basis, that it takes a village to raise a child. Isn’t that what this is? So please mark your calendars and come join us in this wonderful journey of fun and learning. And as Rita Mae Brown puts it 'Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going.'

I’ve been associated with New England Hindi Manch (NEHM) for over three years now. NEHM is a non-profit organization whose aim is to bring people who know Hindi or who want to know Hindi together via cultural, social, and educational programs. And I often hear Preetesh Shrivastava, president of NEHM, proudly say 'Our organization works in a team to keep Hindi language and all its dialects alive. We also like to celebrate the cultural context and history of the language while keeping an eye on its contemporary role and development. We welcome people of all regions, religions and languages to join us and become members of NEHM'. And I would agree with him!
