Please join us for Vinayak Sharma's Sitar Performance Accompanied by Amit Kavthekar on Tabla at LearnQuest Academy of Music this Saturday, May 17th at 6pm in Waltham, Massachusetts.. Date: Saturday March 17, 2014 Time: 6PM-8PM at LearnQuest Academy of Music, 711 Main Street, Waltham, MA Tickets $12 (Snacks will be provided) Please RSVP as seating is limited by sending email to shuklaemail@yahoo.com Vinayak Sharma, is recognized as one of today's exceptionally talented up and coming sitar players of his generation in the field of Indian Classical Music. He grew up in Jaipur, Rajasthan in a family dedicated to music. He was initiated into music at the age of 12 by his Grandmother Smt. Nirmala Devi Bhatt, who also played sitar. Under the tutelage of Pandit Rajeev Janardan of the Imdadkhani gharana, Vinayak studied sitar and developed the intricacies of 'gayaki' (vocal technique) and 'tantrakari' (instrumental technique). He has performed all over India and won many awards from legendary musicians in India and abroad. He was awarded for securing first position in an All India Music Competition three times consecutively. In 2008, he traveled to China as part of an Indian Youth Delegation to perform as a cultural ambassador of India. He was the only musician selected in the instrumental strings category by the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and performed sitar for audiences in Beijing, Shanghai, Guiyang, and Fuzhou. He is a gold medalist in the Bachelor of Music and Masters of Music programs from University of Rajasthan and has just completed his PhD research in Sitar. In addition to performing with other artists in India, he gives solo sitar performances and organizes fusion concerts. Vinayak is also the lead player of the electric sitar (zitar) for the band Rudraksh. www.vinayaksharmasitar.com Young and talented, Amit Kavthekar ('Ganda-Bandh Shagird' of Ustad Alla Rakha) has rhythm running in his veins. At an early age of six, he was groomed in the art of tabla playing by maestro Ustad Allarakha. Since 1991, he is fortunate to be taught tabla intricacies by Ustad Zakir Hussain. He has played with and accompanied many legendary artists such as Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pt. Shivkumar Sharma, Pt. Jasraj, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Ustad Ashish Khan, among others. He has won several awards such as 'Taalmani' from Sur Singar Sansad, Pt Vishnu Digambar Paluskar Award, Scholarship from Govt. of India. Presently Amit is teaching tabla in American School of Bombay (ASB) and in New England School of Music, Boston.
