Mapping the Kumbh Mela Mapping the Kumbh Mela by Rahul Mehrotra Professor and Chair, Department of Urban Planning & Design, Harvard University Rahul Mehrotra is Professor and Chair of the Department of Urban Planning and Design at Harvard University. He is a practicing architect, urban designer, and educator. Mehrotra has written and lectured extensively on issues on architecture, conservation, and urban planning in Mumbai and India. His writings include coauthoring Bombay—The Cities Within, which covers the city’s urban history from the 1600s to the present; Banganga—Sacred Tank; Public Places Bombay; Anchoring a City Line, a history of the city’s commuter railway; Bombay to Mumbai—Changing Perspectives; and Conserving an Image Center—The Fort Precinct in Bombay. As Trustee of the Urban Design Research Institute (UDRI), and Partners for Urban Knowledge Action and Research (PUKAR) both based in Mumbai, Mehrotra continues to be engaged in the civic and urban affairs of the city. He currently is leading a university wide research project with Professor Diana Eck, called The Kumbh Mela – Mapping the Ephemeral City. He serves on the Boards of the London School of Economics (LSE) Cities, and the Indian Institute of Human Settlements (IIHS). He was a member of the 2004 Award Master Jury and the 2010 Steering Committee.
