GROUP STUDY & DISCUSSION OF BHAGVAD GITA CHAPTER 3
All are invited for a group discussion and study on the third Chapter of the Bhagvad Gita led by Shri Anil Kapoor ji from Andover, MA. Arjun did not want to fight this was, he had hesitation to fight this war. After hearing from Lord how great is state of enlightenment and hearing Karma create bondage, Arjun had a doubt that on one hand you are telling me how great is knowledge and on the other hand you are asking me to fight this war to perform karma. Every one of us likes short cuts in life. Arjun is not an exception. Arjun says to Bhagwan that he does not understand why Bhagwan did not advise him not to fight this war and ask him to meditate to gain knowledge. His argument is if ultimately he has to meditate why not start now and why should I perform action. He further calls it “Ghor Karma” the terrible action of war. Arjun begins the third chapter by asking these questions. After hearing Arjun’s question, Bhagwan came to know what exactly confusion in Arjun’s mind is. He came to know Arjun is not very clear between relationship of knowledge and action. Though knowledge is the ultimate goal, action is required to reach that goal. For example in pole vaulting, one has to drop the pole and jump across; we need to reach the height using the pole before we drop it. We cannot jump without the help of the pole. Relationship of knowledge to karma is revealed in the beginning and then Bhagwan goes on to explain why we should perform action and then he explains how we should perform action. Bhagwan explains that both the karma and knowledge are important. He explains why we should perform action and how we should perform action. The Karma Yoga is explained with example. After explaining this, Bhagwan also explains who goes beyond the bondage of action and becomes enlightened. This person still performs action. What is the inspiration behind the realized master to act because he has nothing to gain and nothing to lose but they still act? This is also elaborately explained. Bhagwan also explains the mechanism behind action, how action happens, what are the various factors which are involved because of which action happens. Is it something which is performed by the body or the mind or by the intellect or by the Atman – how exactly the action happen is revealed performing our swa-dharma is being told to Arjun. In the end of this chapter Arjun raises another doubt that there are people knowing what is right but they still go to the wrong path, even after knowing what is good – they commit sin as though against their will – what is that which forces us to commit sin. This question is also elaborately answered by the Lord and this chapter is concluded.
