| Hindustani Vocal Music Concert Dr. Nagraj Rao Havaldar and Ms. Shobha Joshi Accompanied by Mrs. Priti Chakravarty on Harmonium and Dr. Nishikant Sonwalkar on Tabla About the artistes ------------------ Ms Shobha Joshi Born in Karnatak, India in a musical family, Shoba was inspired and initiated to music by her mother the late Mrs. Kamal Joshi who herself had a great passion for music and was a singer. Initially trained by her mother and groomed by different gurus like Pt. Agashe Buva in Pune and Mrs. Manik Varma, Dr. Prabha Atre, Pt. Yashwant B. Joshi, Niwruttibuva Sarnaik in classical music. She took further training in various forms of Indian music, such as Ghazals, Bhajans and light music. Her gurus were Ghazal Maestro Mehdi Hasan, Mahesh Chandra, Yashwant Deo and Jananwatve. Early on in her career, Shoba has received recognition for her achievements including the Surmani award by Sursingar which is a prestigious award in Indian music. After her first public concert at the age of 15 in Pune, she also participated in the prestigious Sawai Gangharva music festival, Calcutta conference and S.G.S. Sabha conference to name a few. Having established a solid foundation in classical music, Shoba has also honed her talents in several lighter forms of Indian music. Her renditions in these genres have gained her worldwide recognition and popularity, having performed over 1000 concerts worldwide and she continues to delight audiences in India and around the world. Her considerable musical talents and melodic voice have also earned her recognition as a playback singer in many films having worked under well known music directors as Jaydevjee and Laxmikant Pyarelal, C. Ramchandra and others. To date she has recorded over 55 solo albums in different categories of music. Both his parents sing devotional music in a traditional way and his elder brother is a singer and a painter. As a college student he was a member of the local orchestra group, where he had an opportunity to learn guitar and drums. Subsquently while he was enrolled in a master's degree program in History and Archeology at Dharwad, he joined the Sangeethratna,a six year diploma program offered by Dharwad University,Karnataka. The music department was then headed by the legendary vocalist Pandit Mallikajurn Mansoor with such luminaries as Pt. Panchakashari Swami Matti Gatti, Pt. Raj Guru, Pt. Sangameshwar Gurav and DR. B.D. Pathak as faculty members. While Shri Havaldar was completing his MA in History and Sangeethratna dgree in music he had also started learning from Pt. Madhavgudi, a prime disciple of Pt. BhimSen Joshi. After completing his formal education in music in Dharwad, Shri Havaldar joined All India Radio as a Program Executive in 1988. After working there for three years he quit his job voluntarily. His short stay at All India Radio made him more determined to pursue music full time as a performing art. Later, she received music instruction at the Bhatkhande Music College in Lucknow for 5 years. During 1956-66, she received extensive training in vocal music from the eminent musician Pt. Vinayak Rao Patwardhan and his son Pt. N. V. Patwardhan. She has extensive teaching experience as a faculty member at the University of Bihar and Patna University. She also held the positions of Chairperson of the Moderation Board of studies, a member of Curriculum committees, and an Examiner for various Universities, including The University of Bihar, Patna University, Bhagalpur University, and the Ranchi University. She has been teaching and performing Hindustani music in the Boston area for many years. She specializes in Dhrupad, Khayal, Thumri, and Bhajan styles of Hindustani music. She is also an accomplished accompanist on the harmonium. Dr. Nishikant Sonwalkar Nishikant Sonwalkar is an accomplished Tabla Player of North Indian Classical style. He earned his Bachelor's degree in music under the supervision of the renowned Pandit Kiran Deshpande and Pandit Khargoankar of Indore, MP. Dr. Sonwalkar regularly performed on All India Radio and Doordarshan (TV). During the period of last several years in the USA, he accompanied distinguished musicians from India, vocalists such as Firoz Dastoor, Gulam Mustafa Khan, Vinayak Torvi, Ganapati Bhatt Gokulotsav Maharaj, Vidyadhar Vyas, Sanjeev Abhyankar, Sudha Malhotra, Sujata Bhattacharya, Tripti Mukherjee and Sumitra Guha, and instrumentalists such as Buddhadev Dasgupta, Bhaskar Chndravarkar and Jamir Ahmad Khan. Dr. Sonwalkar received his Ph.D degree from MIT and is currently the Principal Educational Architect at MIT. He is also the Founder and Chairman of IDL Systems Inc. in Cambridge, MA.
