Swami Agnivesh has been a consistent advocate for the rights of the oppressed and the poor. As the founder of Bandhua Mukti Morcha (movement against bonded labor), he has organized against illegal but prevalent practice of trapping the poor in a cycle of irredeemable debt and committing their labor for generations in return. He is currently the Chairperson of the UN Trust Fund on contemporary Forms of Slavery. As an Arya Samaj actvist, he has challenged and lead movements against harmful and questionable practices in popular religion. He has been a rallying force against communal and majoritarian politics and served briefly as a legislator and Education minister of Haryana. Before renouncing to become a Swami, he was a professor of business and law at St.Xavier
