| Prof. Uday Desai - DIrector, IIT Hyderabad IIT-Hyderabad – A Space to Explore IIT-Hyderabad started its operation in August 2008 under the mentorship of IIT-Madras. IIT-Hyderabad’s Vision: IIT-H will be the cradle for inventions and innovations. It will advance knowledge and scholarship to students in science, technology and liberal arts, and equip them to handle the challenges of the nation and the world in 21st century; while its Mission: To be recognized as ideators and leaders in higher education and research, and to develop human power with creativity, technology and passion for the betterment of India and humankind. The thrust at IITH will be on inventions and innovations – in all aspects: Research, teaching, technology development, entrepreneurship, liberal arts and design. It will be our endeavor to create an atmosphere for uninhibited thinking. The talk will focus on a few ideas that we are exploring at IITH to make an institution with a difference. Some of the ideas are: Confluence of disciplines, Newer Disciplines, Inclusiveness, Flexible academic structure, Entrepreneurship, International collaboration. A Brief Profile: The first batch of 111 B.Tech. students (in CSE, EE and ME) were admitted in Aug 2008. In Aug 2009, another 114 B.Tech. and 35 M.Tech. students were admitted. IITH has 10 Ph.D. students and more will be admitted in Jan 2010. IITH campus has three National Knowledge Network (NKN) enabled class rooms with gigabit internet access and high definition video. IITH is in talk with industries to have sponsored labs for FPGA and VLSI. State-of-the-art workshops have been set up for student usage. As a first step towards green campus, we have installed solar powered LED lights and solar powered water heaters. The institute and hostels are WiFi enabled and internet access is ubiquitous. IITH has made 43 offers for faculty positions in nine departments. The foundation stone for IITH was laid on February 27, 2009 by Smt. Sonia Gandhi, the Honorable Chairperson of United Progressive Alliance (UPA).
