Shashidhar Kote has engendered a new generation of music lovers. His innovation lies in bringing music out of its purist closets to a mass audience who experience semi-classical music in uninhibited ways. This popular singer with 2500 plus vocal performances has created new waves in the field of Kannada Music. His magnanimity and versatility to adapt to all styles makes him the most sought after Kannada singer. Gifted with mellifluous voice that transcends and traverses through all octaves with grace and melody, resonating with richness, he sings his way directly through the hearts of the listener. Kote has redefined the experience of semi-classical music to the public by creating his own style “For the mass and the class”. An element of neo-classical tradition in his rendering is gaining grounds in what is now becoming popular as “Kote Shaili” (Kote Style). He sings in four to five south Indian languages with ease. Kote, born to Vasantha Kumar and Parvathi in Kalanja (SulliaTaluk) near Mangalore, had his formal training in carnatic music under Vidwan Gopalakrishna Iyer and later in Iyengar College of Music, Bangalore. Kote completed his academic schooling and college in Dakshina Kannada. He completed his Masters in English literature from Mangalore University. He served the education field as a lecturer of English for three years, but the music pulled him with profound gravity towards Bangalore. Apart from singing, he is also popular as a television artist. He has anchored various shows on television and has been acting in many TV serials. He shows keen interest in Yakshagana (the popular folk art form of coastal Karnataka) and an expert chess player as well. Kote has been honored with various awards and titles such as Gana Gandharva, Kannada Sarathi, and Gana Garudiga - to name a few.
