Chandan Kumar hails from a family of great musicians. He is the great grandson of Sangeetha Kalanidhi Late Mysore Sri T. Chowdaiah. Chandan Kumar learnt the art of Flute playing from his Guru Vidwan Sri M.Gopalakrishna and he is taking guidance from Padmabhushan Sri.P.S.Narayanaswamy. He is an accomplished A-grade Flutist of All India Radio and Doordarshan. He has performed in major sabhas in India and abroad. The main characteristics of Chandan's virile style are powerful blow, soul-moving melody and refreshing creativity - all resting on rigor and he has rightly earned the epithet 'a singing flutist'. He is also technically skilled to knit himself in Jugalbandhi concerts with prominent Hindusthani artists. Chandan is an active member of Laya Maduraa - unique classical ensemble created by Mridangam Maestro Kalaimamani Sri Tiruvarur. He has also performed with Srutilaya-ensemble with the Mridangam maestro Guru Sri Karaikudi Mani. Chandan has toured abroad extensively including Europe and the US. “Bharatha Kamalalaya†has conferred him with the title “Venu Gana Ratnaâ€. He has unique honor of being the first ever musician to render a conventional Carnatic Concert in the prestigious 'Darbar South Asian Music Festival', international music festival held at London. He has performed in a thematic concert “The Sounds of India†with Padmabhushan Dr. L. Subramanyam and other prominent artists. Various audio companies have released Chandan’s Solo flute archives and live video concert recordings. Several jugalbandhi albums have been released as well such as Flute-Ghatam-Sitar-Mridangam album with Ghatam Maestro Sri. V. Suresh, Pandit Rahul Chaterjee & Sri Culcutta Shekar. Chandan won several awards including BEST JUNIOR CONCERT PRIZE (Music Academy, Chennai), YUVA KALA BHARATHI (Bharat Kalachar, Chennai), ANANYA YUVA PURASKARA (Ananya, Bangalore) and BEST MAIN ARTISTE OF THE YEAR (Senior Musician’s conference - Karnataka Ganakala Parishat). Chandan holds a Masters degree in commerce from the University of Mysore.
