| An American Brat An American Brat SAATh--South Asian American Theatre presents the East Coast premiere of Bapsi Sidhwa’s An American Brat, directed by Irfan Malik, at the Boston Center for the Arts Plaza Black Box Theatre, 539 Tremont Street, Boston. The production begins performances on Wednesday, March 18 and runs through Saturday, March 21. Adapted by the playwright from her novel of the same title, An American Brat is a humorous, touching, insightful look at the common threads of family life. Feroza, a young Pakistani woman sent to the United States by her liberal Parsi parents, is about to marry outside the community—to David, a Jewish American. Zareen, Feroza’s mother, is given the charge to make sure this doesn’t happen. Suddenly Zareen is confronted with more than she bargained for, including a lesbian roommate, a domineering Jewish grandmother and experiences she never imagined. Irfan Malik is artistic director of SAATh. An American Brat is the second play he has directed. He has worked as an actor in independent films and Theatre productions. He has also published three books of poetry and two anthologies of literary translations. South Asian American Theatre—SAATh, as it is popularly known—is a Boston-based community Theatre group. It brings together artists, writers and the wider community to stage productions that explore contemporary social, cultural and political themes.
