| Skeins of Memory / Art Exhibition Krina Patel : Indias of the Mind Salman Rushdie says that when he was writing 'Midnight's Children', "What I was actually doing was a novel of memory and about memory." The images in my work, too, are of memory and about memory. All that I have left behind in India--the reds and blues of soft saris, of wet, rooftops and paths after the first monsoon shower are the warm colors and tones in my monoprints. The scent of ripe mangoes, glow orange, yellow, green on my canvasses. The forms and shapes in my work are inspired by the memory of the intricate chalk drawings that decorate the veranda floors during festivals, by graffiti on billboards, in the bazaars, on trucks and walls. I remember the colours and forms that I have seen crowding every available surface, through which people have tried to reimagine and redecorate their lives and that of others around them. Rushdie writes, "It may be argued that the past is a country from which we all emigrated, that its loss is part of our common humanity." This physical and emotional emigration imprints itself on my surfaces, and speaks of the sense of loss; a remembrance of things left behind. I attempt to salvage my past through my images. However, instead of remaining trapped in a sense of loss, and reliving only the past, I am also engaged in reimagining my present: my life in a new country. I reimagine and capture from memory and from my immediate environment. My roots are now intertwined with the roots of this country. The works of American artists influence my work. It is evident that I already draw upon the work of artists like Helen Frankenthaler and her contemporaries. Through my work, I hope to enter into a visual dialogue with new artists as well. As the India of my past becomes distant with the progress of time, the 'India' of my mind takes shape in my work.
