Maulana Azad, a 2.30 hour solo play in Urdu, revolves around Maulana Azad dictating notes for his memoir, India Wins Freedom, to his friend and secretary Humayun Kabir. Tom Alter portrays Maulana Azad, a legendary freedom fighter against British rule of India and the first Education Minister of independent India. Tom Alter - 57, is an Indian national of American origin with a mastery of Urdu. His long-standing association with theater spans many classic and modern plays, both Indian and foreign, including, Aishwarya, Hanoosh, K.L. Saigal, Larins Saheb, Tri Sanga, Tughlaq, Arms and the Man, City of Djinns, When God Says Cheers, Waiting for Godot, Whatever You Say, The Wizard of Oz, The Alchemist, Pencil se Brush Tak, and Intehaa – the poetry of Mirza Ghalib . A Gold Medalist from the reputed Film and Television Institute of India, Tom Alter has acted in over 250 films and TV Serials. Tom Alter is being awarded a Padma Shree by the Government of India in May 2008
