Luxury For Export Conversation: A Fantastically Embroidered Life
'LUXURY FOR EXPORT CONVERSATION: A FANTASTICALLY EMBROIDERED LIFE'
with Bharati Mikherjee, author, & Michael Downing, author and professor, Tufts University

In her celebrated novel The Holder of the World, Bharati Mukherjee shows us how an encounter with an object – a work of art, a storied gem – can alter the story of our lives. Like the complicated pictorial surface of the 17thcentury embroidered silk featured in the exhibition, the identity of the central character in The Holder of the World is informed and revised by European, East Asian, and American culture, commerce, and religious traditions. Bharati Mukherjee joins Michael Downing for a conversation about her novel, how contemporary ideas about culture and identity alter our sense of the part, and the art of bringing history to life in fiction.
