Hindustani Classical Vocal Recital
Viraj Amar, A Benaras Gharana Artist A Disciple of Pt. Rajan-Sajan Misra Pt. Nishikant Sonwalkar – Tabla Viraj Amar represents the generation of bright, new, talented young artists. She has a fresh approach in Khayal singing. A distinctive feature of her gayaki is a perfect blend of modernity and tradition. Her voice is rich and laden with emotion. Her gayaki speaks of her training and is true to the style of her gurus Pt Rajan - Sajan Mishra. She also sings semi-classical forms like Thumri and Tappa, a special feature of Benaras gharana, with equal ease. She obtained her Sangeet Visharad (Bachelors) degree in 1986 and Sangeet Alankar (Masters) in 1989, and stood first in state of Gujarat. In 1985, she won Pt. Omkarnath Thakur Trophy in Instrumental music (sitar) and in 1986 and 1989, she won the same trophy in the vocal music category. The Gujarat Sangeet Nritya Natya Academy honored her talent with the "Shreshtha Kala Sadhak" award in 1989. She has performed at major concerts such as National Center for Performing Arts, Mumbai; Saptak, Ahmedabad; Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal; and India International Center; Delhi. She has performed in the USA, UK, Japan, Russia and France. Pt. Nishikant Sonwalkar is an accomplished rhythmist of North Indian Classical style. He earned his Bachelors

Directions: From Rt. 95; Exit for Rt. 20 East to Waltham; Go past the town hall and make a right on to Elm Street; go over the rail road tracks (MBTA station) and bear to the right on Elm Street at a car wash. Within 100 ft., the building is on the left on Elm Street across from the car wash exit. Look for balloons at the building entrance. Additional parking is further up the street and near Waltham T-station at the rail road track.
