~Pt. Vijay Kichlu-Elements of Khayal Gayaki~
This seminar, by a well known senior vocalist of Agra Gharana, will explore in some detail the elements of Khayal style of singing, the most prevelent style today among all other styles of Hindustani vocal music. The seminar will expose the audience to the various successive movements of a Khayal rendition starting with the introductory aalap, bandish in vilambit, sthayee, antara, aalap, bolalaap, swara singing, taans, boltaans, layakari etc. and then chhota khayal and its various movements. Being a veteran vocalist of Agra Gharana, Pandit Kichlu will also enunciate the distinguishing features of his Gharana (style) comparing it with other well known Gharanas of Khayal Gayaki. The seminar will incorporate both lecture and demonstration. At the end of the seminar, Pandit Kichlu will be available to answer questions from the audience. Pandit Vijay Kichlu is a veteran vocalist of Agra Gharana. He was a disciple of the famed Dagar brothers. Pandit Kichlu was the director of the prestigious Sangeet Research Academy of Kolkata, India for more than 20 years from its inception to 2001. The research academy has produced such star vocalists as Ajoy Chakravarty, Rashid Khan and Shubra Guha. Since his retirement last year, he has been involved in creating a system of educational recordings that would help students and listeners to learn and understand Indian classical music. One of his other missions is to save the art and trade of the craftsmen who make musical instruments in the remote villages of India. He is a consummate teacher and a rare musician who has always put the welfare of the traditions of music and the other promising artists above hs own career as a performing artist.
