An Evening Of Carnatic Classical Vocal Music By Talented Young Artists from Columbus and Boston

About the Talented Young Artists Divya Srinath ------------- is 14, and is the student of Gnanam Subramaniam, who is a disciple of "Sangeetha Choodamani" T.R. Subramanyam. Divya has learned from Mrs. Subramaniam for four years and has won five awards in special and advanced categories in the Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana Music Competition. Divya is a freshman in high school in Columbus, Ohio. She has played the piano for over five years, plays tennis all year long and for her school, and is an active volunteer and member of a youth leadership/service organization. She is a member of her school Service Club and French Club, is a straight-A student, and is an active participant in her youth BalVikas program. Mathura --------- is 11 yrs old and is studying in 6th grade, honors student in the gifted and talented program at Strongsville schools. She has been learning music for the past three years with Mrs. Gnanam Subramaniam of Columbus. She has also been learning carnatic music from Vidwan Sri.T.R.Subramaniam of Chennai last 2 summers. She has won many prizes in the Thyagaraja festival of Cleveland. She has been giving concerts for past 2 yrs. She has given concert in Bridgewater temple, in Boston, in Chicago in Aurora Balaji temple, for Thyagraja festival 25th anniversary on June 30th 2000.she was the youngest artist to give a concert there. She has also given concerts in Columbus, Ohio. Mathura has been learning dance from Smt.Sujatha Srinivasan of Cleveland. She likes to write poetry and paint. Her artwork has been selected in the kids and arts magazine in the year 2000. Anandi Mani ----------- is a student of Aruna Sayeeram, and hails from Bombay. She has also received music lessons from Geeta Raja. In the U.S., she has received further training under Dr. T. Viswanathan of Wesleyan University. She is a professor of Economics at Williams College and divides her time between Western Massachusetts and Boston. Mahalingam Santhanakrishnan (Mali) is a disciple of Sri P. Srinivasa Iyer of Madras. Mali has been learning and performing on the mridangam for the past 20 years. Mali has a very proud music lineage as he hails from the prestigious mridangam school of Padmashri Palghat T.S. Mani Iyer. Mali forte is his seamless accompanying style, that meshes with, and embellishes the main artist rendering of music. He has also taken advanced lessons from Padmashri Palghat R. Raghu, when Sri Raghu visited the US. Mali has accompanied several local artists as well as renowned senior visiting artists from India. He has also performed in a few fusion concerts, notably with Sri Sandip Burman. Pravin Sitaram --------------- had his mridangam tutelage under his guru Shri P.S. Parameswaran, a disciple of the legendary Palghat T. S. Mani Iyer. He has accompanied artists both from India & North America. Pravin has been teaching mridangam in the Boston area for the past few years. Pravin holds a Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry and has been residing in the Boston area for over 7 years. Gaurishankar Chandrashekhar ---------------------------- learnt mridangam for the last 15 years from Sri. Kalyanakrishnan, a student of Tanjore Upendran and Late. Sri Trichy Raghava Iyer, brother of Sri. Panchapakesa Iyer. He provided mridangam accompaniment to numerous carnatic vocal, instrumental and dance concerts. As a member of Sri Hariharaputra Samaj (Mumbai), I have also provided percussion support for all the divya nama bhajans and sankeerthans.
