Media Advisory Upcoming Event Sponsored by the Center for Indic Studies, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Panel Discussion: Media Coverage of Terrorism in India and Pakistan Venue: National Press Club, Washington, DC, First Amendment Room Date: Friday, April 26, 2002 Time: 2:00-4:00 PM Panelists: Rep. Frank Pallone, NJ Mr. Selig Harrison, Center for International Policy Ambassador Dennis Kux, Woodrow Wison Center of International Scholars Professor Romesh Diwan, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Professor Ved Prakash Nanda, Vice Provost for Internationalization, University of Denver Dr. Mahesh Mehta, Hindu Heritage Foundation of America Dr. Rita Frenchman, Member, AAPI Governing Body. Moderator: Professor Bal Ram Singh, Director, Center for Indic Studies University of Massachusetts Dartmouth In view of the current campaign against terrorism at the global scale, many old ways of doing things are being discarded even as new attitudes and ways are being adopted. Since September 11, a major focus of this campaign has been on the Indian subcontinent, not only because it has been a base to Al-Qaeda and Taliban, but also because of the major tension between India and Pakistan. Many people believe, contrary to rhetoric in the media, that origin of global terrorism is in the Indian subcontinent rather than in the Middle-East. After September 11, many in the immigrant communities of the United States are under pressure for a variety of reasons, and media coverage of their plight as well as causes has a major impact on their life. While terrorism has become a global issue, immigrant communities forming the fabric of the American polity are still identified discretely within the global backdrop. Balanced media coverage is viewed as an issue of fairness and justice, as well as a healthy ingredient of global understanding and peace. The panel discussion will address the US and international media coverage of terrorism related events in India and Pakistan.
