Abstract:
Hindi is the official language of the Republic of India and has had a controversial history within the subcontinent. The talk will cover the evolution of this modern vernacular language and its lexicon. We will discuss the Perso-Arabic influence and the transformations with the coming of Islam in the subcontinent. Scripts and sounds for the language will be covered.

Hindi has at least twenty major dialects across the north Indian plain and we discuss the standard grammar based on the Khari Boli style. The literature in the language will be surveyed highlighting various phases in style and contents. The dominance of Hindi in India's nationalism and India's film industry will be reviewed.
