Agua Thanneer Water
'BarbieeNatyam', (the Dance of Barbies) is a fusion of Indian classical and modern dance featuring five women. It is a satirical look at Barbie culture and how it affects the perception of women's bodies. Drawing from childhood experiences, the dance raises important questions about female body image.
'When I was most beautiful' is a haunting anti-war piece inspired by Noriko Ibaraki's poem of the same name, set to music by Pete Seger. The solo dance, performed by choreographer Aparna Sindhoor, explores the depth of tragedy that war inflicts on women. Accompanied by live music, the work is full of interactive improvisation between the dancer and the musician.
'Agua Thanneer Water' (water water water), written and co-directed by Boston-based writer, Raju Sivasankaran. The challenging interplay of solo dance, music, and theater brings alive two stories about common people's struggle to get water: one set in Madurai, India and another in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Sindhoor's performance, both powerful and exquisite, portrays the struggles faced by the common woman in a piece that blends Indian classical and folk dance, modern western-style theatre, and world music.
Critics have called Aparna Sindhoor's choreography "hauntingly effective", a body of work that "conveys boldly dramatic stories". Another critic raved: "Aparna Sindhoor does not just dance. She becomes one with the stage."
