| Screening of The Journey The Journey (Sancharam) by Ligy J. Pullappally (2004, 107 min.). Set in lush, rural Kerala in the south of India, this lyrical story covers territory rarely visited by Malayali filmmakers. It begins with a childhood friendship between the outgoing Delilah, a Christian girl, and the sober, idealistic, and inwardly focused Kiran, whose family settles next door. They quickly become inseparable, and in time Kiran feels attracted to Delilah, but suppresses it. As neighbors begin to talk about their close relationship, Delilah's family flies into panic mode with arranged marriage plans. Nicely sketching the local color, customs, and characters in a primarily maternal society, Pullappally achieves a piquancy that deepens an already sensitively drawn story. In Malayalam with English subtitles. Date: 05/14/2005 Location: Museum of Fine Arts Time: 7:30 pm Cost: MFA members, seniors, and students $8; general admission $10 Web: http://www.mfa.org/film/2005_gay_lesbian/default.htm |
