| Kanika Pandey Kheyal & Thumri,Christopher Pereji on Tabla Born in 1971, Kanika belongs to the new generation of Vocalists who believe in a personalized musical idiom by assimilating the best of other styles. Kanika ws initiated into music at the age of 10 by her father, Shri Shiv Shankar Pandey, a character deeply dedicated to music, who has all along groomed her as a vocalist. Kanika also enjoys the privilege of receiving guidance from veteran masters like Pt. Sangameshewar Gurav and Pt. N.V. Patwardhan. She has a strong academic background and hold a Masterís degree in Fine Arts (Hindustani Classical Vocal) and also holds ëAlankarí and ëNipuní. Kanika has also been a recipient of many awards and scholarships. She won the Bhamashah Award ë92 of the Maharana Mewar Foundation, Udaipur. In 1992, she was also a Gold medal at the B.F.A. examination at the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur. She has also been a recipient of scholarships from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India and from the Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Academy, Jodhpur. Kanika has recently been awarded a junior fellowship for the years 2000-2002 by the Dept. of Culture, Govt. of India. Currently she is receiving advanced training under the able guidance of Pt. Rajan Mishra and Pt. Sajan Mishra. Besides singing, Kanika has an innate talent for Nritya and has acquired a sound footing in Kathak. She had her initial training for 10 years under the guidance of the well known Guru Shri Giridhari Maharaj of Jaipur. Her performance is a judicious mix of vigorous ëNritta-Angí of Jaipur gharana and the ëBhava-Angí of Lucknow gharana. Kanika has won a number of prestigious scholarships while receiving her Kathak training. The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India and from the Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Academy, Jodhpur, awarded her scholarships in recognition of her talent for Kathak. She holds a ëNipuní degree in Kathat from Rajasthan Sangeet Sansthan, Jaipur. She has given a number of performances on stage and on Doordarshan. Kanika is at present receiving advanced training in Kathak from Shri Rajendra Gangani of Jaipur gharana. Her acting skills were thoroughly refined while she was acting the role of ëQueen Maha Mayaí in the internationally acclaimed Bernardo Bertolucci film, ëLittle Buddhaí. Kanika has also sung under the direction of Ryuichi Sakamoto and Ustad Zakir Hussain in the same film.
