| Sanhita Nandi / Hindustani Vocal Music Concert Sanhita Nandi: Sanhita Nandi grew up in musically rich artistic surroundings of Kolkata which influenced her to take up music as a youngster. She received her early training in Durgapur School of Music and under Pandit Samaresh Choudhury. She participated in numerous competitions and conferences in and around Kolkata receiving a top award in a prestigious Dover Lane young talent search contest. Subsequently, Sanhita was groomed and exposed to Kirana Gharana Gayaki by Pandit A. Kanan, a veteran of Kirana Gharana, then at Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata. Later she also received training in the vigor and "taiyyari" aspect of Kirana-Gwalior gayaki from Pandit Vinayak Torvi of Bangalore. Inspiration and years of "riaz" has shaped Sanhita's gayaki. She has imbibed the skill of presenting a "khyal" with delicacy and purity in Kirana Style. Sanhita holds a Sangeet Prabhakar degree from Allahabad and a master's degree in history from Burdwan University. She is also a graded artist of All India radio, Kolkata. Currently, She resides in the US and has been performing here. She teaches music in the New Jersey area. George Ruckert: A performer, composer, arranger, author and teacher, George Ruckert is a rare breed of artist who has an extensive background in the disciplines of both western and Indian classical music. After he earned his masters degree in western music from Queens College, New York in 1967, he came in contact with sarod master, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and decided to become his disciple. As one of the senior-most disciples of Khansahib, he focused his attention on sarod and vocal music for nearly thirty years. During this period, he earned Gayan and Vadya Bid degrees in 1975 and also served as teacher and Director of the Ali Akbar College of Music near San Francisco. As a solo artist on the sarod, he has performed, recorded, and taught in India, Europe, and the United States. George is also a very accomplished harmonium player. He has recorded and performed with several of the finest Indian vocalists on the harmonium. In 1992 he earned his Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from University of California at Berkeley with his dissertation on the music of Ali Akbar Khan. George is a Senior Lecturer of music at MIT. He is one of the founders of and Artistic Director for MITHAS, MIT Heritage of the Arts of Southasia. Nitin Mitta: Nitin Mitta is a promising and talented young tabla player who has recently moved to Rhode Island from India. He started his training in tabla at the age of 9 with late Pt. G. Satyanarayana and continued advanced training under Pt. Arvind Mulgaonkar of Mumbai. Both his gurus were disciples of the late Ustad Amir Hussain Khan of Farukhabad Gharana. Nitin has been a recipient of numerous prizes and scholarships including the National Scholarship from the Department of Culture, Government of India. Nitin has accompanied many eminent artists, both in India and abroad, such as Pandit Jasraj , Pandits Rajan and Saajan Mishra, Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Pandit Ulhas Bapat, Pandit Nayan Ghosh, Pandit Vidyadhar Vyas, Pandit M. Janardhan, Shri Sanjeev Abhyankar, Ms. Tripti Mukherjee, Shri Purbayan Chatterjee to name a few. He is known for his sensitive and skillful accompaniment as well as for his solo performances. He has toured several European countries including Germany, England, France, Finland, Ireland and the Baltics and had an opportunity to perform at the prestigious “Purcell Room” South Bank, London, Music Academy, Chennai and a solo for “Bandish” in Mumbai. He has also played in a music album titled “Soul Strings “ published by Music Today. Nitin teaches tabla in Rhode Island and at LearnQuest Academy of Music in Waltham, MA.
