Dow-Carbide
ASSOCIATION FOR INDIA'S DEVELOPMENT PRESENTS Dow-Carbide's Toxic Legacy in Bhopal, India: A Call to Action 20,000 dead; 500,000 wounded; 150,000 too sick to work A talk by Nityanand Jayaraman and Krishnaveni Gundu WHEN : Tuesday April 8th, 7 Pm WHERE: Room 6-120, MIT. Synopsis: 18 years ago, Bhopal, a city in Central India, was devastated by a poisonous gas leak from Union Carbide's ill-designed pesticide factory. Located amidst a densely populated and poor neighbourhood, the gas leak killed 8000 people in its immediate aftermath. Known as the world's worst industrial disaster, the tragedy is far from over. The death toll has risen to more than 20,000. The company that caused the disaster is going about business-as- usual. The senior executives who authorised the compromises in safety and design of the plant that led to the disaster remain unpunished. Meanwhile, the effects of the gas are being felt among the new generation -- serious birth defects; intelligence deficits, cancers, immune-system disorders are only a few of the problems plaguing the children born to those exposed to the gases in 1984. Surprisingly, despite the odds, the struggle for justice and to bring the errant corporation to book continues to grow from strength to strength. Join us for a briefing on the Bhopal disaster, an update on the campaign for justice in Bhopal, and a strategy session to evolve ways in which you can get involved in the global fight against corporate crime. PROGRAM Video Presentation Presentation -- Bhopal: Portrait of a Corporate Crime: By Nityanand Jayaraman.
