Silencing and Criminalizing Dissent - Challenges faced by the human rights movement in India
For almost three decades Kavita Srivastava has been part of non-violent resistance undertaken by people to assert their democratic and constitutional rights and attain justice. She works with Women, Dalit, Tribals, Workers and the Civil liberties movements bringing accountability for the crimes committed against them through legal and public action. She is the National Secretary of the People's Union for Civil Liberties, the foremost Civil Liberties organisation of the country. The first fifteen years of her work life were spent working only women's issues and gave leadership to the Violence against Women's Movement in Rajasthan, particularly the anti Sati movement, the campaign for the justice for Bhanwari Devi and the anti rape movement in the State and in creating mechanisms in Rajasthan in order to ensure women's access to the criminal justice system including access to the police. She has played a critical role in the Country in exposing the violations by the State of the rights of Human Rights Defenders and campaigned for the release of Dr. Binayak Sen and Seema Azad. She is working for the repeal of the law on Sedition which is at the root of all undemocratic laws. With the increasing assault on people’s livelihoods in the last decade a major part of her work has been to strengthen the voices of resistance and prevent criminalization of dissent.
