When Earth Sings - Dance Theater by Aparna Sindhoor

Reservations & info: call 617-776-7939 email navarasa@navarasa.org. website www.navarasa.org Navarasa dance theater celebrates its 5th Anniversary International Women's day and Women's history Month performance with When Earth Sings premiering Refugee Ragas and Plantation Talas. Refugee Ragas (Melodies): A solo dance performed by Aparna Sindhoor, Refugee Ragas, explores the ravages of war from the experiences and perspective of women refugees. Accompanied by live music, the work is full of interactive improvisation between the dancer and the musician. Plantation Talas (Rhythms) : Plantation Talas written and co-directed by Raju Sivasankaran is a challenging interplay of classical Indian dance, music, and theater. It brings alive the story of South Asian migrants' especially, indentured women's, life in the plantations of British Guyana leading up to the 1913 revolts. Also featuring guest choreographer Janet Craft. Another critic raved: "Aparna Sindhoor does not just dance. She becomes one with the stage." "Innovative and bold choreography ... leaves deep impact on the audience" Aparna Sindhoor is the founder and Artistic Director of Navarasa Dance Theater that has performed in India Europe, Canada,and across the United States. Some of the critically acclaimed works of Aparna include dance theater based on Mahasweta Devi's "The Hunt", and "Draupadi", and Raju Sivasankaran's "River Rites" and "Agua Thanneer Water". Professor Janet Craft is the Director of the Dance Program at Emerson College and the Artistic Director of the Ipswich Moving Company. She as served as an artist-in-residence for various schools in Salem, Danvers, and Ipswich, and was a guest choreographer with the Independent Company of Alla Sigalova at the Hermitage Theatre in Moscow. Workshop Series: Navarasa Dance Theater is organizing two workshops focused on the theme of the performance. The workshops are scheduled for Feb 23rd and 28th.
