| Maha Shivaratri / CVHTS Mahashivaratri celebration is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. This celebration is traced to the Churning of the cosmic Ocean of Milk by devas (gods) and asuras ( demons). When devas and asuras were churning the Ocean of Milk to obtain amrita (nector of immortality), many unusual substances floated to the top, including the deadly visha (poison), Kalakuta. This potent poison threatened to plunge the entire universe into eternal darkness. The devas prayed to Lord Shiva for help to avoid the inevitable destruction, and He raised his trishula (trident) and condensed the poisonous fumes. In order to save the universe, Shiva swallowed the Kalakuta without spilling even a single drop. Mahashivaratri celebrates the worship of Shiva by devas for saving the universe. The Ocean of Milk manifests the ideal world that should be full of peace and happiness for all living beings. Churning of the Ocean of milk symbolizes human activity in the world. The amrita symbolizes peace and happiness, while Kalakuta symbolizes hatred and greed. Worship of Shiva Facilitates meditation by an individual on his or her own Atman (self). 9:00 AM Ganesha Abhishekham 9:30 AM Venkateshwara Abhishekham 10:00 AM Shiva Abhisekham (Phase 1) Mahanyasa Ekadashavara (11 Times) Rudrabhisekham Panchakshiri & Bhajans Trishati Nama Archana 1:30 PM Mahamangalarathi/Theertha/Prasad 5:00 PM Navagraha Abhisekham 6.30 PM Shiva Abhisekham (Phase 2) Laghunyasa Ekavara (1Time) Rudrabhisekham Panchakshiri & Bhajans Trishati Nama Archana 9:30 PM Mahamangalarathi/Theertha/Prasad Till Mid Night Jagran & Bhajans Date: 03/01/2003 Location: Connecticut Valley Hindu Temple Society Middletown, CT Time: 9:00 am - midnight Organized By: Conn.
