On Wednesday, May 14, 2014, the Network of South Asian Professionals of Boston (NetSAP Boston) held a panel discussion titled, “Meet the Experts” as part of its professional development series. The panel brought together five accomplished South-Asian leaders across various industries to provide their insights from a South Asian perspective. The panelists included Mr. Ramesh Advani (public policy & finance), Dr. Pravin Chaturvedi (entrepreneurship & life sciences), Dr. Sucheta Doshi (medicine & public health), Ms. Sa’adiyah Masoud (law) & Dr. Anil Saigal (academia & engineering).

These panelists discussed a range of issues including South Asians in management and leadership positions, requisites for success in each industry and the role of affinity groups and networks in career growth. The panelists urged Indians to learn to be effective communicators.  "While technical expertise is important, to be able to grow into management roles one must learn to communicate one's ideas effectively" said Dr. Pravin Chaturvedi.

For many young South Asians creating a large impact through their work seems important. Dr. Sucheta Doshi asked people to really introspect and understand what kind of impact they would like to make.  Ms. Masoud talked about the opportunities that being a South Asian lawyer had opened for her. Many South Asian gave her business for she was South Asian.

Dr. Ramesh Advani stressed the importance of learning to work with a wide variety of people. "Working with different groups of people allows you to really grow." Dr. Anil Saigal,  stressed the importance of continuing education. "If you have a bachelor's enroll in a master's program and if you have a master's enroll in a PhD. You may not see the value immediately but believe me it will help you in the long run," said Dr. Saigal.

A key component of this event was the interaction amongst the panelists which led to a robust and engaging dialogue. The panel discussion generated more questions than could be addressed in the allotted time and attendees walked away from the event feeling more knowledgeable about a variety of industries as well as the role South Asians play in these industries.

The NetSAP Boston organization is thankful to the panelists for their participation and engaging presentations during the panel discussion.
