Education allowed us Indian Americans to emigrate to this wonderful land and make a success of our lives. There are many stories of a father or a grandfather who went to a village school thus helping generations after him to succeed.

For a dollar a day you can start that spark for a new child and thus ensure success for generations in that family. To learn more about Ekal or to donate to Ekal, please go to http://ekal.org.

What is Ekal Vidyalaya?

It is an organization that brings holistic development to remote rural and tribal villages in India using primary education as a vehicle. It runs single teacher schools in over 57,000 villages reaching over 1.6 million people. Most Indian NGOs work in urban or semi-rural areas.  Ekal goes to areas that are difficult to reach and often the first to bring education to the village.

What is the cost of running a school?

It costs only a $1/day, $365 dollars a year to adopt a school and thus bring about transformation of a village. Every donor who supports a school gets school allocated to them and can see all the information about the school.  It is the best return on investment on your charity dollar.

What is the impact of Ekal Vidyalaya ?

·       -- Over 1.6 million children are literate and numerate

·       -- In villages like Rampur in the Madhubani district in Bihar where girls used to never go to schools. After Ekal came to the village women are getting education. Some even have college degrees.

·       -- Over 71% of the teachers  (over 40,000) are women who have become powerful influencers in their villages.

·       -- The positive force of education helps keep negative forces like insurgency groups at bay

·       -- Emphasis on ethics and values has helped infuse villagers with positive ideas and motivated them to work towards development in a ethical manner.

What is the future of the Ekal movement?

We are working on several pilots including

·        --  Piloting the use of Solar lamps in villages with no electricty

-- Use of Mobile technologies to improve the breadth and depth of education

·         -- Micro-Rural Entrepreneurship

·        --  Healthcare initiatives

-Speaking at a recent Ekal event, IIT Bombay alumni Dean Nitin Nohria, from Harvard Business School said “The power of education allows you in the end to accomplish things that you yourself would not have dreamt possible.” I hope you will consider bringing that power to millions.
