03/27/2014 PEM’s Curator of Indian and South Asian Art Sona Datta discusses the inception of modernism in Indian art, focusing on PEM’s collection and the work of artist Jamini Roy, the subject of her 2010 book Urban Patua. The inception of modernism in Indian art coincided with the prologue to agitation for Indian Independence when there was a frantic search for roots and identity. One artist looked back to his own roots, which were the folk arts of Bengal. Sona Datta will look at the transformation of Bengal folk arts in the paintings of Jamini Roy and assess how this met his bid for aesthetic independence and his desire to chart and independent course. Last year the Peabody Essex Museum curated Midnight to the Boom, an achievement that really put PEM on the international map as a centre for modern Indian art. However, PEM's collections are also rich in the very materials that inspired Jamini Roy's quest for a new pictorial idiom that made him both quintessentially Indian and modern: kantha textiles, Kalighat paintings, clay dolls and votive objects to name but a few.
