Chand –The  ultimate symbol of Love in Bollywood  songs

Few things fascinate us more than “Chand” or the moon. The very sight of this heavenly body in the quiet of the night inevitably brings with it emotions of romance and love. Not surprisingly, Chand has been a central feature of our Bollywood lore for several decades. Think of Chand and one cannot help but remember several Hindi songs wreaking with romance and tugging at the chords of our hearts. Chaudwin ka chand, Dheere Dheere Chal Chand Gagan Mein, Chand Phir Nikla, Na ye Chand Hoga ... are all hits that have forged the foundations of romance in our lives and will forever remain etched in our memories.

Clearly Chand is one of the most memorable highlights in the music of the 50s, 60s and 70s -- often referred to as the golden era of Hindi films. Who can forget Raj Kapoor and Nargis on the screen with "Dum bher jo idher mooh phere" in Awara?. The ambience of Chand in the still waters of Jabalpur’s marble rocks, the legendary actors, the magical composition of Shankar Jai Kishan, and the voices of Lata and Mukesh, all contributed to making this song timeless. Dev Anand’s inimitable style in presenting the song “Khoya khoya chand”  created quite a rage and a fashion statement, remembered to this day. In the words of Amitabh Bachchan: "We would copy his style of dress. In particular the folded sleeve over the pullover that he displayed in that immortal song ambling down the slopes of a hill station”.

Even beyond the 70s, and despite all the action and masala themes that began to influence movies, Chand and Chandni continued to fascinate.  We see songs like “Neele Neele  Amber pe” come in as a fresh breath of air in the 80s. We also see “Chandni raat hai Tu Mere Sath Hai” from Baghi, and the melodious “Suraj hua madham” from Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham  and “Chand aur tare” from  kahon Na Pyar Hai in the 90s and 2000s.

This universal symbol of love, romance and beauty – “Chand” is truly immortal and will always fascinate us. After all, despite all the stars in the sky, there is but only one Chand.

We showcase this fascination of Chand in Hindi movies through an enchanting musical evening of Bollywood songs based on Chand -- “Chand Aahen Bharega” on November 16th 2013 at the Keefe Tech Auditorium, Framingham MA.

Popular Boston-based singers Mohan Subramaniam, Valentino Almeida, Sowmya Shree and Nidhi Tare Lad will present these magical songs.

The show is presented by Praveen Misra and the well-known radio host Harish Dang -- who recently hosted his 2000th show of Sounds of India. They will be assisted by an experienced team whose members include Jharna Madan, Monica Gill, Jay Pandit and Madhupurna Sen .

Net proceeds of the show will go to the temples of Shri Dwarkamai Vidyapeeth & Shri Gurusthan, Northborough MA.
