Kai Po Chei - Based on a Novel by Chetan Bhagat

Cast: Amit Sadh, Sushant Singh Rajput, Rajkumar Yadav, Amrita Puri
Director: Abhishek Kapoor
Music – Amit Trivedi
Lyrics – Swanand Kirkire

After the success of  3 Idiots, yet another Chetan Bhagwat novel is ready for a successful film launch. Three seems to the magic number here as well – there are  three protagonists.  The soundtrack also has only three tracks and yet all are very well worth listening to.  No item numbers, no Punjabi tracks or jingles – just some nice original tracks..

“Manjha” where an esraj (sarangi sounding instrument)  stirs your soul  and fills your heart with a warm glow reminding you of the wonders of rural India. For this beautifully composed piece, Trivedi adds a masterstroke with intermittent beats that echo softly in your ears. The effect is simple but stunning.   Unlike many modern songs, one can listen and enjoy the lyrics. A lovely ode to friendship. Trivedi sings the piece himself.
After an inspirational ode on life we have an utterly dreamy romantic song that will have you flying around in the breeze like a free kite!  Lovely romantic number.

Kuch lamhe thhe
Alsaaye se
Bharmaaye se
Fiza mein
Kabhi sehme se
Muskaate
Jaana kidhar
Na Jaane...

“Meethi Boliyan” has a soft mesmerizing tune with a simple classy acoustic guitar, percussions and drums. Mille Nair’s laid back style and natural sweet voice is a perfect foil for Trivedi’s own contribution to this song where, as a backing singer he amplifies Mili’s verses and takes the song forward superbly:

Aye zindagi hamen sohbaton ka nasha hai
Yeh sohbatein yaaron ki
Aye zindagi hame hosh ki na tu dava de
Dua de, dua de...

The final song is a Garba titled “Shubhaarambh”. Amit Trivedi’s fusion of traditional folk music, shehnai and thumping drums is a delicious treat on the ears! The singing styles between Shruti Pathak and Divya Kumar is wonderful.

Hey shubhaarambh
Ho shubhaarambh
Mangal bela aayi
Sapno ki dehri par
Dil ki baaji re shehnai

An auspicious end to a lovely track.
