Hindi Play - Kuch Khatti Kuch Mithi

Anoop Kumar and Anil Saigal
05/05/2003

"Kuch Khati Kuch Mithi" hilariously dramatizes some of the happy and sad moments of a middle class family life.

Shantilal invests his entire saving to buy a flat in a 'high society' and moves to live in with his wife Tara (Apara Mehta, Kyunki Saas bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi fame), two sons and their wives. The family that once lived happily in a small house, encounters problems due to dearth of money. The sons, Amar and Raju, are not able to pay the hospital bills of their father. Difference in opinion develops between the two ‘bahus’ on managing house, paying bills, etc. The sons get frustrated with their wrong decision about the flat and decide to forge father's signature to sell the house. Finally the play ends in a funny twist, Shantilal teaches his children a lesson and makes them realize their responsibilities.

"Niche Aishwarya dekhe milti ho to Nirupa Roy kaun dekhega, Taj Mahal Dekhne mile to purana khandar kaun dekhega", say Shantilal in comparison to the beautiful women in swimming pool of new flat to his old wife. The play was filled with humorous comments and rejoinders, making audience laugh all the time.

The play was directed by Feroz Bhagat, who also plays the role of Shantilal. It was brought to Boston by Eshani Shah and Lata Patel. Free dinner was served to the audience before the play. The auditorium R.J. Grey High School was packed and the venture was quite successful. The organizers have arranged for a repeat showing on May 30th at Brooks Middle School Auditorium, Lincoln, MA.
