WGBH Celebrates Asian Pacific American Heritage Month May 3rd

As the local broadcaster to the Greater Boston area, public media powerhouse WGBH consistently seeks to provide diverse quality programming, reflective of the entire community it serves.  During heritage months like Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May, WGBH curates dozens of hours of incredible films and stories  from the past year to highlight the Asian diaspora.  This year, WGBH is pleased to highlight a new project of our producer-in-residence, Val Wang.  She will discuss the development of Planet Takeout, a multimedia, participatory documentary project about the Chinese takeout restaurant as a vital cultural crossroads in Boston and beyond. The radio and web-based project aims to turn local Chinese takeouts into spaces for community storytelling, using them as lenses into both the local neighborhood and into global immigration patterns to the city.

Other highlights for the evening:

·         Guests will be invited to share their own experiences of "takeout" by trying the innovative technologies that Val is using to record stories for the documentary project

·         A thought-provoking Q&A and panel discussion about the how we experience different races and cultures through food.  Guest panelists include Shruti Mehta, chef and Indian cooking educator, Chris Chung, executive chef/co-owner, AKA Bistro and former chef at Clio restaurant,  Christine Liu, online web editor for America's Test Kitchen and freelance food writer. The panel discussion will be moderated by WGBH's General Manager for The WORLD Channel, (and former Channel 5 executive), Liz Cheng.

·         The premiere of a Bharatanatyam performance by renowned dancer and choreographer Mesma Belsare. Mesma has created this performance exclusively for the event and it is inspired by the river Ganga.

·         Traditional music by the Boston Chinese Drum and Dulcimer Ensemble

·         Delicious array of traditional and fusion Asian cuisine (chicken dumplings, curry fried rice and more!)

The event is May 3rd , 6pm at the WGBH studios.  Admission is FREE but RSVP is required at www.wgbh.org/asianevent
