Poetry: One Man In India…

One Man in India…

One man in India all those years ago,
One man in India drove out the British,
One man in India fought without fighting,
One man in India led the salt march,
One man in India gave one nation a voice,
One man in India spoke for those who could not,
One man in India was the last hope for many,
One man in India set a path we must follow,
One man in India had the courage of a lion,
That Man was the change I want to be in the world.
Salutations to Mahatma Gandhi

Hari’s note:
It was about a month ago when my mother told me about a poetry competition. She added that the theme was “Speaking Up”. It took me about a second to think of Mahatma Gandhi. I watched the movie about him around a year ago, and I remembered how inspired I was by him. I was inspired by him for many reasons. I was amazed by his compassion in treating people of lower caste with supreme respect. I was amazed that this one man took a stand and in doing so, made the whole nation rise up as one against British colonization. This man was never ashamed to be who he was even when people in London mocked him for wearing Indian clothes. Gandhi was an example of what a 99.999999% perfect person should be.

(A submission for the 2012 inter-generational poetry contest conducted by the West Roxbury Public Library in April to celebrate National Poetry Month. The theme was “Speaking Up” and this poem won first place.) )
