A mother is born when a baby arrives into this world. The newborn exhausted, sleep-deprived mother experiences perennial bliss to see her child turn, sit, crawl, walk, win, achieve and settle. Life becomes a memorable journey throughout the motherhood, blessed is such a mom. In Bhopal however, the picture is not so rosy. Many mothers became the victims of the disaster with their motherhood journeys cut sharp and short as they buried their children. Rashida Bee was an illiterate victim, a brave survivor who later evolved to become the most powerful voice for the voiceless victims of Bhopal. She went on to win the Goldmann Environmental Prize. She continues her campaign for the survivors. But life has become a living hell for the unlucky ones who survived, weeps another mother in the recent award-winning documentary ‘Bhopali’. The movie shows the pain of mothers as they struggle to give a decent life for their handicapped children. Further, in Bhopal, many women may not know what motherhood is afterall. “Nobody wants to marry a girl from Bhopal”, says Rashida Bee in the BBC documentary on Bhopal. These are the unborn mothers of Bhopal.

All these mothers cry out for ‘No More Bhopals’. Their slogan “hum Bhopal ki naari hai, phool nahi chingari hai” wants to send a clear message that “we are not flowers to be offered at the altar of profit, but we are the flame that will conquer the darkness”. These are the women who struggle for justice so that the Miracle called Life can continue uninterrupted. This Mother’s Day, please come to the Divine Strings concert organized by ICJB to honor the women of Bhopal, who have taken a journey which they don’t want any other women to endure anywhere else in the world. What better gift could a mother want?

The following is a short background about our group, our cause, and the Bhopal disaster:

In December 1984, the city of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, India suffered the world’s worst industrial disaster. A chemical plant belonging to Union Carbide (now a subsidiary of Dow Chemical) released 40 tons of methyl isocyanate, a highly toxic chemical, immediately killing 4,000 people and affecting over 500,000 residents of the area. Till now, over 25,000 people have died as a result of the disaster, and thousands of Bhopalis are suffering from illnesses caused by exposure and water contamination due to the toxic waste left behind. On average, one person dies every day from its effects. Meanwhile, Indian authorities have failed to bring Union Carbide to account. Moreover, despite the repeated promises to clean up the toxic wastes, it remains, poisoning the water, the land, and spreading its tentacles every passing day.

The International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal is a group working with members of the South Asian and human rights community to provide justice to the survivors of the Bhopal Chemical Disaster. Besides trying to engender support for the cause and work towards providing justice, our group is trying to build a movement that ensures or tries to ensure that there are No More Bhopals as a result of gross negligence and lack of corporate responsibility (Union Carbide/ Dow Chemical), here or anywhere else in the world.
