The MIT South Asian Culture Show on April 1, or “C-Show,” presented by the MIT South Asian American Students Club proved to be a great show and fun for all. Drawing hundreds of people, it showcased the best of MIT’s talent and South Asian culture ranging with dances and vocal performances from all parts of South Asia.

The show opened with Natya, MIT’s premiere classical dance team. Natya delivered a beautifully choreographed Bharatanatyam performance filled with upbeat moves that entertained the audience. MIT Bhangra followed with a high-energy dance that had the crowd cheering and screaming. They used saabs, umbrellas, and lighted sticks they used to perform in complete darkness.

Chamak, MIT’s fusion dance crew performed next with a clean, powerful, mix of Indian classical and American pop and hip-hop dancing. They were follow by the dance that most of the women in the crowd were waiting for: Men in Heat. Fifteen of MIT’s best male dancers, South Asian and not, took the stage for an enlivening performance complete with Tim the Beaver, MIT’s mascot, dressed in a sari .

The freshman of MIT came together for the 2014 class dance, followed by the sophomore dance: Masti 2013: Back in Black , both wild crowd pleasers. The last show of the first act was Southie, an energetic piece performed to Kollywood songs.

Swara, MIT’s Carnatic Vocal group, opened the second act with a modern rendition of Vathapi Ganapathim accompanied with mridangam and vocal percussion. The junior class dance followed with more entertaining moves. Bollywood Babes (picture attached), C-Show’s invite-only dance, lived up to its name and reputation with fast-moving and complicated dance moves, executed perfectly. Ohms, MIT’s first and only South Asian a cappella group followed with renditions of popular Bollywood songs that had the crowd cheering. Northie, which brought together the best dance styles of North India came next. The last act of the night, as always, was the senior class dance (picture attached), which was the perfect way for the seniors of MIT to say good-bye to MIT, SAAS, and C-Show.

The entire night proved to be an amazing testament to the talent and culture of MIT students. Special thank you to the C-Show coordinators, Ramkumar Venkateshwaran ’13 and Dhruv Parthasarathy ’13, as well as all the choreographers and participants. For those who had a chance to go, SAAS and all the performers hoped you enjoyed all the acts. For those who did not, keep your eyes open for the DVD sales and further announcements and events organized by SAAS!

The talent at MIT is simply too astounding to go unseen.
